In Xinjiang Province, northwest China, the Taklamakan Desert is expanding irrevocably. Swiss photographers Stéphanie Borcard and Nicolas Métraux have documented the impending disappearance of Uyghur culture. Most of the photos in the report "Xinjiang – Untitled" were taken in the oasis town of Hotan, where the Silk Road once ran between China and Europe. It is also here that Muslims are said to have won a significant victory over Buddhists in the 10th century. Today, it is the Han Chinese who seriously threaten the existence of Uyghur Muslims. Significant oil and gas reserves have been discovered beneath the Taklamakan Desert. The Chinese government has invested heavily in infrastructure, providing the vast region with an extensive road network.
