In Senegal, thousands of children grow up in the poverty of Koranic schools. Entrusted to marabouts, highly respected religious authorities, thousands of children live in daaras and become talibés. Day after day, these children, often in rags, sick, or beaten, recite the Koran, a sacred book written in a language they do not know.
