Standard cherry trees in the Rigi and Zug regions were once very popular. But then production declined, and the trees disappeared. Thanks to regional efforts, the trees are now being planted again in greater numbers, and the fruit is used in specialty products. But a new threat is already looming: the spotted wing drosophila could herald a second mass extinction.
