When the Rhine floods and carries driftwood, you can see people standing on the banks of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley with grappling hooks. Rhine woodcutters use these to pull the wood ashore. In the past, this was a way for citizens without forest rights to obtain firewood. Today, it's a hobby and a living tradition that I documented for Keystone-SDA.
