The sudden death of the incumbent Vaud State Councilor Jean-Claude Mermoud on September 6th, following a ruptured aorta, deeply moved the canton. As part of the multi-page tribute to the Minister of Finance in 24 heures, I had the opportunity to collect the vivid testimony of Professor Ludwig von Segesser, a leading expert in cardiac surgery, who courageously recounts how he was unable, despite the tireless efforts of his team, to save the statesman's life.
