In Switzerland, people whose asylum applications have been rejected receive only emergency aid. A hopeless situation: Families with children are housed in civil defense shelters and receive between six and twelve francs per day to survive. Children, most of whom were born in Switzerland, experience this particularly badly. Normal educational development is threatened by a very strict integration policy. According to the Federal Office for Migration, over 1,200 children and young people lived in emergency aid centers in 2009. How many of these were born in Switzerland is unknown.
