Surviving in the Valley of Death

Daniel Rihs

In 1999, Serbian militias attacked several villages in southern Kosovo. Women and children were displaced, and the unarmed men were killed. Twenty years later, the people felt abandoned by their politicians and the international community. The economic situation was dire, and there was no willingness for reconciliation on either the Serbian or Kosovar sides.
