Private Zoo

“The quiet is a good thing for some of the animals,” explains the director of the Servion Zoo in the Lausanne hinterland. The pheasants, for example: they’ve been laying more eggs than usual this spring. The monkeys, on the other hand, miss the visitors. “They’re a bit bored. We try to keep them on their toes.” Meanwhile, the industry is complaining that lockdown is being lifted later for zoos than for museums and libraries. They predict a weekly countrywide loss of 2.5 million francs. They expect additional help from the federal government: It is not possible to cut back on staff hours and maintain the animals’ care.
