Radio Kanal K, Aarau

YOU are Radio is a media project for and by people with a special life story, who live alongside us, but about whom we often know little or nothing (or want to know). This includes social groups such as children in hospices, adults with serious illnesses, inmates in correctional facilities, people with addiction problems, residents of retirement homes, monastic orders, and others whose life stories are extraordinary. After several days of on-site introduction to the radio craft by our team of journalists, these groups take the microphone and independently produce their own one-hour radio show. All content, contributions, and even the selection of music are their own. The outcome of each show is therefore completely open. YOU are Radio aims to break down prejudices, fears, and ignorance by offering a forum for journalistically unfiltered, free expression of opinion and to democratize the microphone to some extent. At the same time, participants gain a personal counterpart who is interested in them and their special, often very difficult, life situation and who listens to them. The DU bist Radio editorial team, which supports the production on-site, consists primarily of job seekers who attend the Stage on Air employment program at Kanal K. Our team of journalists, some of whom are young and vulnerable, faces these social groups at DU bist Radio, who are dealing with particularly serious life crises. Experience has shown that engaging with these issues leads to a reassessment and often a repositioning of one's own life situation. DU bist Radio has been broadcast monthly on the Aargau regional broadcaster Kanal K since 2009. Since January 2012, the Basel station Radio X has also broadcast our format. The submitted program was produced by 20 people with disabilities at the Foundation for the Disabled in Lenzburg and Oberentfelden.
