A journey of hope sometimes leads over a mountain pass in the middle of winter. In 2018, even during January, African refugees attempt to reach France from northern Italy via the Col de l’Echelle, located 1800 meters above sea-level – dressed in jeans and sneakers. In the border town of Bardonecchia, a faithful Muslim is at prayer (134). Some who embark upon the arduous trek are never seen again.
