Canadian journalist Kathy Gannon was reporting on the elections in Afghanistan with her colleague, photographer Anja Niedringhaus, when the two were attacked by an assassin. Niedringhaus was killed, Gannon survived with serious injuries. Two bullets shattered her right hand, one punched through her right shoulder and three more almost severed her left hand from her forearm. This picture was taken on 2nd May 2016, on the occasion of the World Press Photo in Zurich.
