Laret - Transit Center Landhaus (News 2017, by Annina Oliveri) - Swiss Press Award

Maryam is Afghan. After her husband was killed, she fled with her mother, sister, and six children. In Afghanistan, widows are considered inferior and shameful. They face discrimination, threats, and live in fear of violence, particularly sexual assault, and sometimes even murder. On their journey from Turkey to Greece, Maryam and her youngest daughter, Hasti, were separated from the rest of the family. Two sons and one daughter have since been found, but the others remain missing. Transit Center Landhaus, Davos Wolfgang, 2015

For almost two years, I have been portraying the residents of a transit center in Davos Laret. Through direct visual encounters, I aim to sensitize the viewer to the human side of the Swiss asylum system and create a space where asylum seekers and refugees emerge from the anonymity created and reproduced primarily by the media.
