“I went away in a suit, hat, gloves and handbag, and came back completely transformed …” Maria, 74, still remembers the day in 1964, when she went to the airport in London – where she was studying – to welcome the Beatles. Today she looks back, together with her daughter Alessandra (48) and her granddaughter Nina (18), on the years when a young woman such as herself, who studied, worked and got divorced was viewed with suspicion, not to say outrage. “Women are the ones who have to change, not men,” says Maria. She believes that women are labouring under an assumption that they will not have the same opportunities as men. For Alessandra and Nina, the focus is on questions of equal opportunities, equal pay and equal respect. The day is the 14 June, the day of the women’s strike, when Alice Pedrazzini records this female family portrait for RSI Rete Uno. “Dear Nina,” says Grandma Maria, “I hope that in 20 years’ time you will be a woman who is able to help other women.” – “In 20 years,” says Nina, “I see myself as a woman who – I hope – is satisfied, fulfilled, independent, happy. With or without a man.”
