Three months after the scandal of the secret surveillance of banking star Iqbal Khan was made public in various media outlets in mid-September, the NZZ revealed that: not only had the former international chief asset manager at Credit Suisse (CS) been secretly monitored before his move to competitor bank UBS, but the CS head HR manager had been, as well. The introduction to a series of articles, laying out the documentary evidence for “Operation Küsnacht”, states: “The circumstances indicate that it was Credit Suisse who commissioned the surveillance via a middleman”. The Khan case – “Operation Crown” – was meticulously researched and backed up using documents such as interrogation records. In their conclusion, the authors eagerly anti-cipate “the next instalments”, which they expect to follow. Their predictions proved correct: CS boss Tidjane Thiam, who had denied any knowledge of the specific actions taken, but broadly described surveillance as a “legitimate part of the arsenal”, was forced to leave in February 2020.
