They might be scouts, voluntary workers, or people who work in the arts. With the outbreak of the epidemic they have made themselves available to support those who, for one reason or another (often advanced age), are no longer able to manage their own shopping or other errands. Or to provide accommodation for those medical staff who cannot cross the borders to return to their homes. Or to cook a dish such as Polenta, to satisfy a craving of those stuck in isolation. With Social Distancing and Lockdown many people are lacking human contact, and so even a simple conversation can be a consolation. Social media has moved on from being a place for gossip, to providing platforms for contact with volunteers. These are the “Warriors of Light,” a name given to them by the RSI broadcast “Laser,” inspired by the eponymous Paulo Coelho novel. Barbara Camplani has captured the voices and stories of these ordinary people who have completely anonymously launched themselves into unexpected and surprising acts of volunteering and solidarity.
