"China - Love Cutting"

Stéphanie Borcard Nicolas Métraux

China – Love Cutting is a series of diptychs of Chinese hairdressers and their respective homes: a dialogue between public image and private sphere. The project is set in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, far from Beijing and Shanghai. A rapidly expanding economic center in western China, this megacity has approximately 14 million inhabitants, the majority of whom come from the surrounding countryside. Each portrait reveals a young hairdresser who has chosen to move to Chengdu in search of new job opportunities. Job offers that include accommodation are highly sought after by newcomers. While some employers provide a room or bed in their apartment, it is most often a dormitory shared by other staff members. These young workers will spend several years in these conditions before attempting to have their own place. All images were taken in the spring of 2012 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China
