Jan Schöpfer, 21, from Kerns (OW), was born with Down syndrome. Becoming a farmer via the traditional route was always going to be a pipe dream for him, were it not for farmer Beat Windlin, lovingly called “Bap” by Jan. The young man has been allowed to help on Windlin’s farm, two days a week for the last eight years, including trying out the automatic cow brush on himself (71). On the Alp by the Melchsee he joyfully broadcasts the traditional “Alpsegen” prayer call (72). Windlin knows the best approach with his young farmer: precise guidance, a sense of humour and calm.
