For more than two hundred years, the village of Urnäsch, in the Appenzell region, has been celebrating the New Year on December 31 and January 13. The»Silvesterchläuse”, only men, go from house to house to yodel, dressed up in elaborate costumes that are divided into three categories, the»Wüeschti” (ugly),»Schöwüeschti” (beautiful-ugly) and the»Schöni” (beautiful). Tourists come from all over the world to enjoy the custom, but it is meant for the locals.
