Christine Hug lived as a man for forty years. Then Christian, she became Christine. The feeling of being in the wrong body had haunted her since childhood. But the decision in 2016 to acknowledge it and finally start down the path to gender realignment was only the very beginning of a difficult journey that would last for several years. It also pushes the marriage to its limits: Tanja Hug loses the man she married (137) and has to accept the woman at her side (138, in February 2020 in the Hugs’ house in Tscheppach, Solothurn). Meanwhile, Christine remains “dad” (140) for daughter Julia. In the military, her transition to being a woman is practically free of complications: instead of a male commander, from the autumn of 2019 a female commander is in charge of tank battalion 12 (139).
