For years, the management of French-speaking Swiss television station RTS, allowed a culture of silence to reign in regard to (predominantly sexual) harassment, abusive behaviour and misuse of power. Despite serious reports of a hostile work environment from employees and unions, the management chose to cover up the problem for a long time. Three journalists collected around thirty testimonies supporting the allegations. Their research shows that, from as early as 2010, the management had been informed of serious incidents including suggestive messages, bullying and crude sexual advances by two executives in particular. However, the perpetrators were protected by the prevailing climate of fear. Victims were relocated within the organisation and those responsible were given a slap on the wrist or even “kicked upstairs.” The investigation also looked into the case of Darius Rochebin, the TV station’s star presenter, who abused his position of power to attain sexual favours. The #MeToo movement, which gained traction in 2017 as a way of empowering women, has fueled public debate about abuse and rape.
