Eisser Armensuppe (poor people's soup) has a long tradition in the Seeland municipality of Ins. It was cooked every lunchtime in the basement of the Ins schoolhouse for children who couldn't go home. Albert Anker's 1893 painting "Die Armensuppe" (Poor People's Soup) illustrates this. I photographed the cooking of this soup. It's a gritty, everyday situation familiar to everyone.
